Four Payment Giants Tower Over LINK — Could Tokenization Change the Equation?
The market values of the world’s largest payment networks dwarf Chainlink by a wide margin. At the valuations used in this analysis, Visa alone is worth roughly 75 times more than LINK.
Together, PayPal, American Express, Mastercard, and Visa have a combined market capitalization of about $1.53 trillion — equivalent to nearly $2,000 per LINK when divided by a circulating supply of roughly 767 million tokens.
The Scale of the Gap
The comparison highlights the difference in valuation between established payment companies and blockchain infrastructure.
Based on these figures, PayPal’s market capitalization translates to approximately $63 per LINK. American Express equates to around $273, Mastercard to $691, and Visa to nearly $970.
These calculations are illustrative comparisons, not LINK price targets. They divide each company’s market capitalization by LINK’s circulating supply without accounting for differences in business models, revenue, token economics, or how value accrues to token holders.
Still, the figures raise an important question: how much could blockchain infrastructure matter as traditional finance expands its use of tokenized assets?
Where Chainlink Enters the Picture
Chainlink’s opportunity is not necessarily to compete directly with Visa or Mastercard for consumer payments.
Instead, it aims to connect financial institutions, blockchains, and traditional data systems.
Swift and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) have explored tokenization and blockchain infrastructure initiatives involving Chainlink technology.
These efforts aim to support the movement of financial information and tokenized assets across different systems while accommodating existing institutional requirements.
Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) and oracle services are designed to support this type of connectivity.
TechGaged has examined how Swift’s tokenization push could reshape financial markets and increase the importance of blockchain infrastructure.
If tokenized securities and other financial instruments gain wider adoption, demand for reliable interoperability services could grow.
However, increased network usage would not automatically translate into equivalent demand for LINK.
Price Action Reflects Broader Softness
As of writing, LINK trades near $12.46, down 7.2% over the past seven days, according to the figures in this analysis. The token has retreated from levels above $13.50 and is consolidating around the mid-$12 range.

This pullback does not necessarily undermine the long-term tokenization narrative.
However, it illustrates how market sentiment and short-term liquidity can outweigh longer-term developments in the near term.
Meanwhile, TechGaged has reported on the growth of Chainlink’s reserve, which accumulates LINK using revenue generated through designated services.
A Different Kind of Value Proposition
The valuation gap between LINK and the four payment giants is substantial, but it does not establish that LINK should reach any particular price.
The companies and the blockchain network perform different functions. Payment firms operate established commercial networks, while Chainlink focuses on connecting blockchains with external data and other systems.
TechGaged has also explored Chainlink’s expanding infrastructure ambitions and the potential role of interoperability in connecting traditional finance with blockchain-based settlement.

If tokenized settlement scales, Chainlink could benefit from greater demand for interoperability and data services.
Whether that growth translates into sustained value for LINK will depend on adoption, token economics, and how network activity creates demand for the token.
