The US government’s Bitcoin moves raise questions. Arkham data shows government-linked wallets moved large sums in early October.
K33 Research counts about 17,733 BTC sent to Coinbase Prime, including 12,267 BTC tied to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
Labeled government holdings fell from 324,527 BTC to 306,795 BTC. Traders now ask if a sell-off is coming.
What Does the Arkham Table Show?
At 13:33 UTC on 8 October 2026, a wallet labeled US Government: Bitfinex Hack sent 12,267 BTC, worth $1.01B.
Arkham shows the coins went first to new, unlabeled addresses. K33 counts them among the coins that reached Coinbase Prime.

The table also shows two earlier Bitcoin deposits to Coinbase Prime, about five days before the screenshot. They were 1,418 BTC ($118.37M) and 1,156 BTC ($96.38M).
Two USDT transfers from FTX Alameda wallets, 94.149M and 24.885M, also landed there. A further 2,818 BTC ($235M) moved between government wallets.
Is This a Sale or Custody?
K33 says the move is most likely custody, not a sell-off. Coinbase Prime serves as custodian for the US Marshals Service.
The Bitfinex coins remain in a claims process, and the Department of Justice has ordered restitution to victims in BTC.
About 1,200 BTC tied to FTX and HashFlare cases may have been sold to pay victims. The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve order covers only fully forfeited coins, according to K33.
Why Markets Care
At 14:15 UTC on 12 October 2026, price was already facing pressure, as Bitcoin defies two major macro headwinds from the dollar and Treasury yields.
Demand has also cooled, since Bitcoin ETF inflows collapsed 88% in early October. Thin demand makes supply headlines louder.
For scale, Strategy added 250 BTC this week. The government moved about 70 times that amount.
Signals That Would Settle the Debate
Watch for deposits from Coinbase Prime to trading venues. Watch for new Justice Department notices on victim payouts.
Coinbase Prime deposits can mean custody or a sale. The next on-chain moves will show which one this is.
