Binance Names Justin Yek CFO as Kaiser Ng Exits After Major Security Breach

Binance is replacing chief financial officer Kaiser Ng with Justin Yek, a former finance executive at payments company Airwallex, in a leadership change announced just days after the exchange suffered a major security breach. The timing puts the executive transition under unusual scrutiny, although Binance says the succession was planned well before the incident.

What Binance has confirmed about the CFO transition

Co-CEO Yi He said Ng is leaving to pursue a new venture after more than five years with Binance. According to reporting by Reuters and The Block on November 7, Yi He said the handover plan had been in place for roughly six months. That timeline is important: it means the company is expressly presenting the change as a previously arranged succession rather than a response to the late-October attack.

Ng had been Binance’s CFO since January 2022 and previously worked at Kraken. Incoming finance chief Justin Yek was most recently vice president of finance at Airwallex, bringing a background in payment infrastructure and financial operations. The announcement did not specify an effective date for the departure or identify Ng’s planned business venture.

The transition comes as Binance manages the aftermath of an October 29 intrusion in which attackers stole more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency across multiple blockchains. In its November 3 incident update, the exchange described a sophisticated campaign linked to compromised employee systems and malicious software. Binance has said it intends to make affected customers whole and has been reopening withdrawal services in stages.

Investigators and reporting have attributed the theft to North Korean-linked attackers; those assertions should be distinguished from the exchange’s own public account of how the breach unfolded. The scale of the incident raises separate questions about security governance, treasury liquidity and the operational consequences of reimbursing customers.

Why the finance role matters now

A CFO is central to capital management, reserves, accounting controls and counterparties’ confidence. Those responsibilities take on greater importance when a crypto exchange must fund customer reimbursements and demonstrate that it can process withdrawals safely. A change at the top of the finance function therefore carries more weight than an ordinary executive appointment in the present circumstances.

There is no verified basis in the announcement to conclude that Ng was removed because of the hack. The more useful test will be what Binance discloses next: the pace of withdrawal restoration, any updated proof-of-reserves disclosures, and the accounting and operational treatment of the losses.

For customers, the immediate priorities remain practical: check the exchange’s official status notices before attempting transfers, verify that the relevant asset and network are supported, and avoid unsolicited messages claiming to offer reimbursement or expedited access. High-profile exchange breaches commonly create opportunities for impersonation scams.
