Crypto Market Stages $840B Comeback — What Could Drive the Next Move?

The crypto market stages an $840B comeback. CoinGecko’s Q3 report shows total market cap rose 39.6%, or $840.1B, to about $3.0T.

That ended three straight quarters of decline. It was also the strongest quarterly gain since the fourth quarter of 2024.

How Big Was the Q3 Rebound?

Market cap started the quarter near $2.1T. It peaked at $3.0T on 21 September and closed at $2.96T. August did most of the work. Market cap rose 21.8% that month, adding $489.8B.

CoinGecko ties the surge to a US Treasury plan to double bond buybacks and steady Bitcoin ETF inflows. The market is still down 4.0% for the year.

Is Participation Keeping Up?

Not fully. Spot volume on the top 10 exchanges fell 14.2% to $1.65T. Average daily volume fell 8.6% to $73.3B, a third straight quarterly drop. Perpetual futures open interest climbed 40.6% above $100B.

That points to a leverage-led rally. Fund demand has cooled too, as Bitcoin ETF inflows collapsed 88% in early October.

Sentiment Cools to Neutral

At about 20:20 UTC on 16 October 2026, the CoinMarketCap Fear & Greed index read 49, which is Neutral.

The 30-day chart shows the index near 80 around 21 September, the same day market cap hit its peak. It held near 74 for a few days, then eased to about 68 by early October.

It dropped into Neutral around 7 to 8 October and has hovered near 50 since. CoinGecko’s chart tells the same story for total market cap.

It starts January near $3.0T, falls to $2.4T in April, and hits $2.1T in July. It then recovers to about $3.0T by September. Trading volume picked up from August onward.

Three Drivers to Track

Macro data comes first. Rate-hike fears have returned, and Bitcoin was already defying two macro headwinds from the dollar and Treasury yields. ETF flows come second.

Supply on exchanges comes third, since Ethereum exchange liquidity hit a 7-month low. Q3 proved the market can rebound fast. Q4 has to show the crowd is still there.
