BNY Adds XRP and RLUSD Custody as Ripple Targets Tokenized Trade Finance

BNY has expanded its digital-asset custody relationship with Ripple to support XRP and Ripple USD, bringing two distinct crypto assets into a large traditional financial-services institution’s custody platform. The companies are also investigating how tokenized trade-finance instruments might be serviced and used in institutional markets.

The October 27 joint announcement says BNY now supports XRP and RLUSD on its Digital Asset Custody platform for eligible clients. The relationship extends existing work in which BNY acts as a primary reserve custodian for RLUSD and provides services connected to Ripple Prime.

Those functions should be separated. Custody support means the bank can safeguard or administer assets within an approved service; it does not necessarily mean all BNY clients may trade them, that BNY endorses an investment thesis or that holding XRP becomes economically similar to holding dollar-linked RLUSD.

From holding digital assets to using them as collateral

The more ambitious part of the agreement concerns tokenized trade finance. This involves digitally representing claims such as receivables or financing instruments and potentially enabling them to move through blockchain-enabled servicing and settlement workflows.

Ripple and BNY say they will explore opportunities with C2FO, a working-capital platform, to connect approved invoice financing with digital settlement. That is an exploration of future infrastructure, not an announcement that the entire trade-finance market has already migrated to XRP Ledger.

For an institution, tokenized receivables only become useful collateral when there is reliable evidence that the underlying invoices exist, that the purchaser or debtor owes the amount, that the claim has not been pledged twice and that settlement is enforceable under the applicable law.

Blockchain can improve records and transfer processes, but it does not independently verify the commercial truth of a receivable or remove counterparty credit risk. The custodian’s and service provider’s controls remain essential.

What is live, and what is still planned

The custody support for XRP and RLUSD is described as an active capability. BNY’s ambition to extend its support to additional tokenized assets and give customers direct RLUSD minting and redemption access remains subject to future product and regulatory decisions, according to the announcement.

That distinction prevents a common overstatement: it would be inaccurate to present an intended mint-and-redeem service as a facility already offered to every BNY customer.

Institutional custody can reduce some operational barriers by providing familiar controls, segregation arrangements and service-level expectations. The bank’s involvement, however, does not guarantee asset liquidity or protect against all losses associated with the issuer, network or transfer instructions.

For market observers, the key signals will be which client categories gain access, whether the proposed tokenized-finance products actually launch and how the firms document ownership and redemption. The news is an expansion of credible financial plumbing, not proof of a predetermined XRP price outcome.
